Gardening in a Small Space
Although some gardeners dream of gardens that stretch over acres, many gardeners create perfect little window boxes of plants on apartment balconies, in condo courtyards, in handkerchief-size backyards or even on a small deck. Creating a tiny garden is a challenge, but it's immensely rewarding when done well.
Before You Start: Clear or de-cluttering the area where you plan to start your garden. This not only maximizes your gardening space, but allows your new garden to be the center of attention.

Step One
Containerize, use every bit of space creatively with containers. Fill a collection of large pots, or build large planters to fill the space. Even a fence can be dressed up with window boxes along its top or pots hung from special rings or other supports.
-
Step Two
Smaller plants are an economical option when you have large spaces to fill, but in tight quarters you need quick drama. Splurge on big, gorgeous plants that will immediately transform a small space with color.
-
Step Three
Make the space come to life. Add a small tabletop or container water feature for the soothing sound of water. Choose fragrant plants whenever possible to appeal to your sense of smell. This packs a lot of activity and interest into a small area.
-
Step Four
Spend a few minutes every day watering, deadheading, and grooming plants so the space always looks inviting. Bring in fresh plants immediately if a current planting is beginning to wilt or brown.
